But Kubernetes doesn’t magically fix pipeline design. If our builds download the internet every run, we’ll still pay the price—just in container startup time. We improve this with caching (where sensible), using pre-baked agent images, and keeping dependency downloads predictable. For languages like Node and Java, a curated agent image with the right toolchain saves real minutes per build.

We also set resource requests/limits so one build doesn’t bully the cluster. And we ensure the Jenkins controller has a service account with only what it needs.

If you want Jenkins in Kubernetes to feel calm, keep images small, keep pods ephemeral, and don’t run stateful workloads in build pods. Kubernetes is great at disposable compute; let’s use it that way.

Observability and Troubleshooting: Make Failures Boring

A mature Jenkins setup doesn’t eliminate failures—it makes them understandable. The difference between “CI is flaky” and “we know why that test failed” is observability and a little consistency.

We start with the basics: timestamps in logs, consistent stage names, and test reporting. We also keep build logs for a reasonable time and archive the right artifacts (not everything under the sun). If builds generate coverage reports, lint results, or SBOMs, we store them as artifacts too. That gives us a paper trail that’s useful during incidents and audits.
